Steve Jobs on Design

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

Steve Job on Design

Steve Jobs once said, “Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer – that the designers are handed this box and told, “Make it look good!” That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

“Steve [Jobs] didn’t ever code,” Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak wrote. “He wasn’t an engineer and he didn’t do any original design, but he was technical enough to alter and change and add to other designs.” He was perpetually retooling his employees’ work, never shy about having them change it or otherwise improve it based on what he knew would work.
